Here’s to under achievers

We were having coffee with a neighbour a few weeks ago when I confessed a deep, dark secret.

I’m an under achiever and I’m proud of it.

When my handy friends are up to their elbows in drywall and laminate flooring renovating their houses, I feel like I’ve accomplished a full day’s work if I hang a single hook above my hot tub so my bathrobe doesn’t get wet on the railing.

When my athletic friends get up at six in the morning to go for a run to train for their next half-marathon, I roll out of bed around eight, read the paper, then take the dog for a leisurely walk on a trail, but only after my second cup of coffee.

When my professional friends juggle full inboxes and sit in endless meetings, I spend hours on my computer going down rabbit holes like how to brine a turkey, best beach destinations and cute sweaters on sale for fall.

When my friends who are super parents bake homemade cupcakes for the school bake sale, coach hockey and sew Halloween costumes worthy of being on stage in a Mirvish production, I’m buying half-price cupcakes at Foodland and cutting two eyes out of a sheet to make a ghost costume for my kids.

When my talented designer friends decorate their houses for Thanksgiving and Halloween with beautiful table settings, centrepieces and yard displays that could be in Better Homes and Gardens, I’m plunking a pumpkin on my front porch and grabbing forks and knives out of the dishwasher to wash to make sure we have enough cutlery for Thanksgiving dinner.

Call me lazy and unambitious, but there is something to be said for being an under achiever. First, you have way more time on your hands. Second, you never feel like a failure if you don’t attempt anything hard. And finally, you’re happy most of the time because you’re not worrying about your next goal or putting pressure on yourself to do or achieve something.

I give thanks I’m an under achiever.

This week’s #HappyAct is to throw away ambition for a week and embrace your lazy self. Here’s a picture of one of our favourite four-legged visitors, Rigby embracing the under achieving lifestyle.
